I guess if the sharers are otherwise not going to pay to subscribe it may get them hooked with a few free months, but I would feel guilty if I got a free month for 5 subscribers! Free subscription to a substack is an extremely low bar, especially for ad free content
I can see how it can work, and snowball. (The newsletter service Beehiiv has long made a referral system like this their major selling point.) But I suppose what you'd need to do is figure out what percent of your free subscribers convert to paid, and then set your reward tiers to reflect that, so you're not losing money on the setup.
Alternatively, it would be nice if Substack made it so you get rewards based on how many *paying* subscribers get referred.

That's what I wasn't sure about! These thresholds are slightly higher than the default Substack gives you of 3/5/15, I think it is.
